Moms and Muffins

On Thursday the 31st (my due date!!), Oliver's preschool had Moms and Muffins. So I got up, got Elliot fed and settled in with Grandma, and Dad and I headed to preschool for the morning. His class is so cute! His teachers, Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Shank are wonderful. We started the day with circle time where they go over the days of the week, months of the year, and dates on the calendar. Since it was the end of the month, we got to count all the way to 31! They had cute little songs to go along with everything. It was then time for morning stations where they could eat their muffins, decorate paper muffins, make a beaded bracelet for Mom, or play in the sensory table/play stations set up around the room. Oliver was so sweet and cuddly the whole time. It was so nice to have a little one on one time with him, especially so soon after E was born! We had a great morning!

Me and my buddy.
Playing in the sensory table. It was filled with rice today, but they switch out the toys and filling every couple of weeks.
 Making me a beautiful bracelet.
Up on the cabinet, they had all answered the question "why do you love your Mommy". Mrs. Murray said that they wrote down exactly word for word what each kiddo said. Ollie's reply: our new baby. She is a good Mommy. Yeah, make the emotional postpartum mommy cry! Love him.

The first days at home

Jon stayed home from work on Monday so we could have a little time to adjust to being a family of 5. He gets a week of paternity leave, but my parents came in Monday evening to help out for a few days; so we sent Jon to work so he can stay home and help later. It was so great having them to help out. I was able to get Ollie and Evie to school without having to take Elliot out in the cold. O and E also got a lot of Grandma and Papa playtime.

Snuggling in the "magic swing"(nicknamed by Trish and Mike 4 years ago when Luke was born). Everyone should have one of these!
Meeting Grandma and Papa. Mom and Dad had a busy week as Kylie had her baby, Corbin Henry, on 1/17, a week before I had Elliot. They are now officially the Grandparents of 8! And it will be so much fun for Elliot and Corbin to grow up together.
Night 5/Day 5 was a little rough as the hungry hungry hippo decided to cluster feed all day/night long. I nursed him at least 16 times. So Jon and I decided to pull out the playmat and try to keep Elliot awake for a bit after his daytime feedings in the hopes that he would sleep a little better/longer at night. It seems to have worked so far. Little man also would much rather sleep with someone holding him-he doesn't really love the bassinet. The swing will suffice for a bit during the day, but he wouldn't sleep in that at night either. On night #9 I pulled out a sleep positioner that we have that has little pillows to hug his sides. That is the best night of sleep we have gotten so far! He just loves to be held and snuggled.

Finally got the newborn shots at 5 days old.
 So handsome!
E with his sweet little bear from Great-Grandma Haug. It is the only toy that he has gotten new, so I am going to try to use it in his monthly pics. It is pretty small, but looks huge next to him right now!
 Trying on Elliot's hat.
 Oh man!
 Attempt at a sibling pic.
 Worn out!
Elliot's sweet little old man hair. It is pretty long in the back! Ollie's hair was darker than this when he was born, so I am super curious to see if we end up with another blondie, or if one of our kiddos will take after Daddy. I am holding out for one with blue eyes too! Right now his eyes are the same color that Ollie's were at birth, so we will see...

Welcome home!

On Sunday around 7:30, we headed home from the hospital! Elliot loved his carseat, and was asleep and snuggly the whole way home. We walked in the door to two very excited little people. They were so pumped to meet their new brother!! We established a few ground rules: No picking up the baby/carrying the baby around, and No feeding the baby! Eva had been telling Grandma all about how she was going to carry the baby around the house; so we are on major lookout. The kids both had awful colds when we came home, so I have been trying to also keep them from touching Elliot's hands and face. Easier said than done; so we have been using a lot of hand sanitizer.

Checking him out:
We utter the phrase "be gentle, be careful" about 500 times a day. They are so good with him, and just want to hug and kiss and snuggle with him all the time!
First photo as a family of 5.
Snuggling with Grandma Marie. She was so wonderful to take a day off of work and spend the weekend with Oliver and Eva while we were at the hospital.
 Kisses!
So excited to hold her baby brother for the first time.
 So sweet.
So mad that she couldn't fit in the baby carseat...
Brothers! Oliver is so awesome with Elliot. The first time he held him, he started singing him a song that he made up with the words "Don't worry, Bubba's here, don't worry, Bubba's here, Elliot, Elliot, Bubba's here.". Melt my heart! And I love that he is referring to himself as Bubba, which has always been Evie's nickname for him.
 My boys.
Comparing feet! I pulled out the kiddo's footprints from birth, and Ollie and Elliot have the same size feet! Evie's were bigger...
Jon snapped a pic of Elliot and Evie, and as soon as the flash went off, Elliot put his hands over his face. Of course Evie had to do the same thing! Now she not only repeats/copies everything that Oliver does, she is going to copy Elliot too!

Getting ready to go home!
Our old neighbors the Barlows bought this outfit for Ollie when he was born. Back then I didn't realize the huge difference in the sizing of baby clothes, and this little Ralph Lauren outfit says 6 months. It is more like a 0-3, so Ol never got to wear it. It was the perfect coming home outfit for Elliot!

Happy Birth Day, Mr. Elliot!

I had my last OB appointment on January 23rd, at 38 weeks and 6 days pregnant. Evie and I went and saw Dr. Ronco. I had been feeling pretty heavy and tired. When she checked me, she said that I was 3cm dilated and 50% effaced. She stripped my membranes with hopes that it would send me into labor, and we talked about scheduling an induction. I only measured 37.5cm and had measured 38cm 2 weeks before, so baby boy had definitely dropped! That afternoon Dr. Ronco's nurse called with my induction date: Friday the 25th, be at Women's Hospital at 6:30am. We had Grandma Marie come down and stay Thursday night so we could head to the hospital bright and early on Friday morning! Here is the long birth story, but you can just skip to the pictures at the end if you would like!

We got to the hospital, got registered, and headed up to our room. I had blood drawn, an IV placed, and fluids started. Lisbeth was my nurse for the day, and was absolutely fabulous. My biggest concern was getting my antibiotics in since I was Strep B positive, and she stayed on top of the pharmacy until they arrived! The resident checked me, and said that I was 4 cm dilated and 50% effaced. Crazy that I walked in the door like that! I was hoping that the day would go quickly since I was almost halfway there already. We got our pitocin started, and settled in for the day. Dr. Gates came in to see us. He was on call for my practice that day, and is just the nicest guy. It had started snowing, and he said the roads were slick, so we got there at a good time! My meds were all started by 8ish.

At 12:45 when I got checked, I was only at 5.5 cm, but 75% effaced. Things were working, but going to take awhile. That was OK since I needed to get my antibiotics in. My contractions had finally fallen into a regular pattern by this point, so Dr. Gates broke my water, and said that there was no turning back now! My contractions weren't very painful, and I was distracting myself by texting with a few friends, so Jon and Lisbeth both went to lunch. Lisbeth was laughing at me. She was in awe that I was contracting every 3 minutes, and reading a magazine. It's all about focus, baby! I have a pretty high threshold for pain.

Around 2:15 after they both came back from lunch, and Lisbeth reassured me that getting the epidural wouldn't slow down the labor process since it was controlled by Pitocin anyways, I decided to go for it. I made a good decision too, because while I was getting it placed, things were getting pretty uncomfortable! The anesthesiologist was awesome! He had a resident with him, and there was a student nurse following me, so he explained everything step by step in detail as he did it. The one person who didn't appreciate this was Jon. He was looking a bit green while I was getting poked in the back. I asked him several times if he was OK. Luckily he made it through. ;)

At 3 pm I was still only 5-6 cm dilated, but 90% effaced. Dr. Gates reassured me that everything was going well. Lisbeth kept saying that I had a beautiful baby on the monitor, and all of the other nurses were jealous. We continued to hang out. Jon had watched a movie or two during all of this, and we worked on a name.

At 4:30 I was at 8 cm, and threw out the name Elliot. We spent a little time on google making sure there weren't any convicts named Elliot Jeffrey, checking out the meaning of the name, and the popularity. Yes, we were last minute decision makers again.

At 5:15 things were getting a little scary. Lisbeth was concerned because the baby started having decels on the monitor(heart rate dropping), so I was turned onto my left side and put on oxygen. I was a bit freaked out, to say the least, but was reassured that sometimes when things progress quickly, this is pretty normal. They also said that if they tickled the top of baby's head, his heart rate would go back up which is a good sign. I was checked, and completely dilated and effaced. He was still up a bit high.

Dr. Gates came in a bit later, and said that baby was still a little high, but we could try a practice push to see what would happen. My practice push sent the little guy all the way down, and it was time to deliver! After 1-2 pushes, his little head was halfway out, and I was told to sit and wait. This was the most uncomfortable part of the whole thing. Dr. Gates was giving his head a little time to stretch everything out. I wanted to push, but stayed put and followed directions. Luckily this guy came out facing the right way. After about 5 minutes, I was instructed to push again. His head was all the way out, with his little hand resting on his cheek. I think I only pushed 1-2 more times, and Baby Haug #3 was on my chest crying. The entire process took maybe 15 minutes. It was such an easy delivery! Jon cut the cord, and I got to hold the little guy for a bit before they took him over to check him out.

Elliot Jeffrey Haug was born at 6:14pm on January 25, 2013. We all took a guess on his weight, and were all way under. Little Mr. ended up being 8 pounds and 11 ounces, and 21 inches long. What??? I was in complete shock that I had an almost 9 pound baby on board. He is so long though, he isn't chunky at all. He has blue eyes, dark hair, and the sweetest chubby cheeks. Looking back at the other two, he is a total clone of Ollie, just with a rounder face and head. We are madly in love with the little guy. He is so chill and very sweet!

Yet again, we had a wonderful experience at St. Vincent Women's Hospital. In the post-partum unit, I had the same two nurses both days/nights. Chris and Laura were both so sweet and wonderful. Due to the horrible flu outbreak, we weren't allowed to have any visitors, but facetimed multiple times with Ollie and Evie, and also got facetime visits from Aunt Erin, Aunt Jenna, Aunt Jody, and the Injays.

Elliot did great at the hospital. He is nursing well, and peeing and pooping great. He failed his first hearing test in his left ear, but then passed both sides 12 hours later. We think that he is absolutely perfect. I just want to snuggle with him all the time! We got to go home Sunday evening. It was raining and warm out. Crazy Indiana weather!
